Strong general or old man?

  The earlier existing document that directly described Jiang Ziya's content is the "Book of Songs".

Among them, Jiang Ziya has the bravery of "Eagle Strikes the Sky".

  "Mao Shi Zhu Shu" further explained this: As a general, Jiang Ziya assisted the king of Wu, and was praised for his bravery in the war against Zhou.

  This seems to be different from the image of Jiang Ziya in most impressions.

  There is a clear record of Jiang Ziya's "wu yong" in "Historical Records". In the war where the king of Wu defeated Zhou, when the two armies set up their positions and the decisive battle was about to start, Jiang Ziya led a small team of warriors to take the lead.

  In other words, in this record of "Historical Records", Jiang Ziya is not an image of a dreadful old man, but more like a soldier who takes the lead.

  In the Han Dynasty, Zhao Qi also mentioned Jiang Ziya when he wrote a commentary to "Mencius". His evaluation was "If you have a brave plan, you will be a general".

  Although Jiang Ziya was still a military commander in the Han Dynasty, it is certain that many legends and stories related to Jiang Ziya have appeared at that time.

Even in "Historical Records", there are contradictory claims about Jiang Ziya.

  For example, although Sima Qian mentioned Jiang Ziya’s “brave” side in the "Historical Records," he also recorded the story of the elderly Jiang Ziya seeing King Zhou by fishing.

However, Jiang Ziya's specific age is not mentioned here.

  "Suo Yuan", which records historical stories and legends, says that Jiang Ziya met Zhou Wenwang when he was 70 years old.

  It is hard for us to imagine how the "old" Jiang Ziya charged into battle in the war.

  On the other hand, from the historical documents of the Han Dynasty, the story of "Jiang Taigong Fishing" is widely spread.

  Related to this, Ji County (now Weihui, Henan) had established temples to worship Jiang Ziya in the Eastern Han Dynasty.

According to local legend, Jiang Ziya used to fish near Ji County.

Therefore, "there is Taigong Temple on the north side of the east gate of the city".

God of War or military division?

  In fact, due to his outstanding military exploits, Jiang Ziya was worshipped as the "God of War" during a considerable period of history.

  For example, during the Tang Tianbao period, Wuju people selected from various places were invited to visit Taigong Temple, which is the temple where Jiang Ziya was worshipped.

  Also in the Tang Dynasty, Jiang Ziya was also named the "Wucheng King". It can be seen that the Taigong Temple at that time was basically equivalent to a place for worshipping the "War God" or "War God" and had the function of a national "Wu Temple".

  In the Song Dynasty, people's sacrifice to Jiang Ziya was slightly upgraded.

  But in the literary works, the image of Jiang Ziya has gradually changed from a military commander to an image similar to Zhuge Liang.

  In "The King of Wu's Fighting against Zhou Pinghua" that appeared in the Yuan Dynasty, Jiang Ziya did not charge much anymore, but he still controlled the battle. It was an exhaustive strategy and seemed to be more of a military division.

  More dramatic changes occurred in the Ming Dynasty.

  In the twenty years of Hongwu, the ceremonial memorial please imitate the previous generations, "establish martial arts, use martial arts, still worship the Taigong, build Zhaolie Wucheng Temple."

  But Zhu Yuanzhang rejected this proposal.

Fairies or ordinary people?

  The Ming Dynasty "Fengshen Yanyi" further deified Jiang Ziya, and various spells appeared in the story.

  For example, in the forty-eighth chapter of "The Romance of the Gods", Jiang Ziya used a certain spell to get rid of Zhao Gongming: "After Ziya worshiped for six or seven days, Zhao Gongming died and did not return. He felt drowsy and just wanted to sleep. Later, Zhao Gongming became more drowsy and unconscious when he slept." Jiang Ziya once asked Li Jing and others to make use of peach wood and dog blood.

All of these are of course related to the overall style of "Feng Shen Yan Yi".

  But on the other hand, in "The Romance of the Gods", the image of Jiang Ziya begins to feel grounded, with the troubles of ordinary people.

  In the novel, Jiang Ziyahua has practiced for decades and is good at catching demons and fortune-telling.

  However, he was not immediately appreciated after practicing, but lived a life of ordinary people: 72-year-old married a 68-year-old "Huanghua daughter."

After marriage, he sold dried noodles, opened a restaurant, and sold pigs and sheep, but was unsuccessful. He was also scolded by his wife as "a person who only knows food and drink."

  It wasn't until he met Zhou Wenwang at the age of 80 that Jiang Ziya in the novel began to strategize.

  At the same time, Jiang Ziya in "The Romance of the Gods" is no longer the image of the leading military commander, but prefers the identity of a military commander or commander in chief.

  In the novel, most of the military operations commanded by Jiang Ziya were successful, but once he went into battle, he repeatedly failed.

  For example, in the forty-seventh round, Jiang Ziya fought against Zhao Gongming, and was beaten to death by a flog, and was later rescued by Guangchengzi; and in the seventy-second round, Jiang Ziya also fled one after another.
