The UN and the British government announced on Wednesday that they would organize a climate event on December 12, on the fifth anniversary of the international Paris agreement.

Participating countries will be invited to present updated climate plans in advance of the major UN climate conference to be held in Glasgow in November 2021, COP 26. Under the Paris Agreement, each country sets its own targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but these targets, currently insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C compared to the end of the 19th century, must be regularly revised upwards .

"We are in the midst of a climate emergency, and we have no time to waste," said United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who will co-organize the event with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

In December, the United States will have become the only country on the planet to have withdrawn from the agreement, at the request of President Donald Trump.

But Joe Biden, his Democratic opponent for the November 3 presidential election, has pledged to return to the pact when he takes office on January 20, 2021, and to pass reforms to put the United States on the trajectory of carbon neutrality in 2050.
