Karin Viard and Benjamin Biolay in "Les Appearances" by Marc Fitoussi -

SND

  • An expatriate couple sees their happiness shattered in “Les Appearances”.

  • Karin Viard and Benjamin Biolay are caught in a chain of lies and deceit.

  • We think of a suspense in the manner of Alfred Hitchcock before this poisonous thriller.

We know that we should not generally trust it.

Les Apparences

by Marc Fitoussi perfectly illustrates this saying, not without humor.

A couple of French expatriates played by Karin Viard and Benjamin Biolay conceals under the veneer of an idyllic happiness deceptions and other lies which will lead them to the irreparable.

This thriller, freely adapted from

Trahie

by Karin Alvetegen, brings a nightmare to its heroes in the heart of the microcosm of a community of expats in the icy settings of Vienna.

"This closed middle side of notables took on a Chabrolian aspect that I liked", admits the director in the press kit.

It is especially the influence of Alfred Hitchcock, of which Claude Chabrol also claimed, which hangs over this dark history.

The couple were almost perfect

First christened

Valses de Vienne

,

Les Apparences

has changed its title.

However, it is indeed an impression of macabre dance that emerges from a story where the characters are caught in an implacable gear.

As with Hitchcock, the spectator witnesses the decay of their relationships while their world crumbles around them.

Their more than questionable choices lead them into a nightmare that evokes the best films of the Master of Suspense from

Suspicions

(1941) to

Vertigo

(1958).

Death on the trail for heroes

The star duo supported by excellent supporting roles (Pascale Arbillot, Laetitia Dosch and Lucas Englander) share their headlong rush to a spectator that they leave breathless.

Here again, we think of the fugitives from

L'inconnu du Nord express

(1951) or

La Mort aux trousses

(1959), trying to escape an implacable fate.

Marc Fitoussi is also a fan of Patricia Highsmith, the author who inspired the first of these two films.

The anguish that he raises throughout his story is all the stronger, as unlike the heroes of Hitchcock, his family have nothing false culprits.
