A sperm whale makes the show in the bay of Cannes -

It is an observation as rare as it is striking.

On Tuesday, the crew of an SNSM speedboat observed a marine mammal, probably a sperm whale, very closely in the bay of Cannes

"It was very close to Sainte-Honorat, a mile south of the tip of the island," says Jean-François Léonard, the new president of the SNSM of Cannes Golfe-Juan, who was on board the boat with his crew and some journalists.

"About ten meters away"

“We were welcoming the Belem, which was transiting from Nice to Cannes.

As he circled the boat, a boater saw a characteristic spray of water in the distance.

We checked with the binoculars and indeed it was a cetacean.

"

Quickly, the decision to go and observe it more closely is taken.

“We cut the engine and, in our era, we slowly approached up to ten yards from him.

It was relatively peaceful, stayed on the surface between two small dives ”.

Then comes the highlight of the show: “after a few minutes, he did a nice turn, sticking his tail out of the water as we see in animal documentaries, and he dived.

We never saw him come out again ”.

The animal presents the characteristics of an adult sperm whale, with its breath directed forward, its small dorsal crest, and its majestic split tail.

Common in the Mediterranean, it is rarely seen so close to the coast.

For Jean-François Léonard, “it was the first time that I saw one in the bay of Cannes, in 30 years of sailing in the sector!
