Yesterday, the Austrian government said that the dance, which is held annually at the Vienna Opera House, will not be held next February, due to the continuing health risks.

The announcement comes on the heels of a similar cancellation of the city's dances.

The announcement places additional pressure on the vital tourism sector in Vienna, which is facing travel warnings from many European governments, amid the high incidence of Coronavirus.

The Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, said: "This decision was not easy, but we chose to cancel, as the infection occurs especially in parties and festivals."

The dance at the Vienna State Opera is an annual event, which attracts about 7,000 celebrities, politicians, heads of institutions, and ordinary people annually, and represents the height of the season of dance parties in the Austrian capital.

The waltz is a big dance in Vienna, where dancers not only spend money on tickets, but on expensive clothes, hairstyles, dance lessons and restaurants.

More than 500,000 people attended dance parties in the city last season, generating 140 million euros ($ 164 million) in revenue, according to the local chamber of commerce.
