Ecology: Luxury accessories made from fish skins -

20 Minutes

What if the salmon skin of your sushi could serve as a watch or a wallet?

This is the challenge that three Lyonnais set themselves by creating the Ictyos company.

They collect the skins of salmon, sturgeon and carp from breeders and sushi restaurants.

The goal: to reuse its materials to prevent them from ending up in the trash.

Every year in France, 50,000 tonnes of fish skins go to landfill.

"This logic of recycling, of reusing a resource which today is not exploited and which is not a new resource to be exhausted on earth, is the basis of any next good production project", explains Benjamin , co-founder and president of Ictyos.

“Today, it is the role of our generation to build the world in which we want to evolve and that we want to leave to our children.

"

Once harvested, the skin is worked for two weeks.

Scales and fat are removed.

All that remains is the collagen which is transformed into leather and dyed.

The company then sells its marine leather to leatherworkers, watchmakers and shoe manufacturers.

The result: high-end watch straps or even luxury bags.

We reassure you (especially considering the price), no fishy smell will emerge!
