Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm canceled due to "Corona"

Today, the Nobel Prize winners said that this year's winners will not receive their medals and certificates in the ballroom in Stockholm, as is customary due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Instead, the prizes, which are expected to be announced next month, will be distributed during a televised ceremony in December, with each winner receiving their prize in their own country.

The Nobel Foundation canceled the luxury banquet held at the end of the annual celebrations in December.

This is the first time that the banquet has been canceled since 1956.

The head of the Nobel Foundation told the TT News.

Lars Heikensten, “We decided in the spring not to hold a traditional award ceremony,” he added, “but we wanted to wait until the end of the summer to see what happens before we announce it.”

He said that each winner will receive his prize, either at the Swedish embassy or the institution in which he works.

The prestigious Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held in Oslo, where the winner is chosen by a Norwegian committee.

The prizes awarded in the fields of science, literature and peace were founded and funded on the will of the Swedish businessman and inventor of dynamite Alfred Nobel, and have been awarded since 1901.

Sweden has recorded more than 5,850 Covid-19 deaths, which is a large number relative to the population compared to its northern counterparts, but it remains less than the number in other countries such as Britain and Spain.
