Watching

Succession

(

HBO

) is like touching a sore with the tongue: uncomfortable, but satisfying.

The fashion series consecrated by the Emmy 2020 - seven awards, including the best drama series - is a

catalog of human evil

shared among its protagonists without exception.

They are all hateful.

But they hook.

And not because they hide benevolent layers hidden deep within their beings.

They are irritating;

very unpleasant, terribly unbearable;

bad without nuances ... and that is precisely why they are

great, unique and addictive

.

The setting for

Succession

is the relentless fight between the heirs of a media mogul for control of his empire.

Manipulations, lies, betrayals and disloyalty

are the weapons in this shameless battle between the contenders,

immune to blood ties and gifted with cruelty

.

Here there is not a long-suffering family man who goes down to hell when the disease twists his life, nor a mobster with a conscience who goes to the psychologist.

In this fiction many things happen that seem to be a lie, but many others are as credible as reality itself.

Since its premiere, Logan Roy and his family have often been compared to the story of

Rupert Murdoch

, the Australian businessman who owns a media empire that includes Fox News,

The Times

or

The Sun

among other media, and one of the most influential men in the world.

The similarities between the Murdochs and the Roys seem obvious: from the central figure of an all-powerful media mogul to the struggle of sons to control their father's empire.

As the documentary

The Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty

(BBC)

recounts

,

Elisabeth Murdoch

and her brothers

James

and

Lachlan

starred in a dispute over leadership in family businesses in the 90s.

The very trigger of the

Succession

plot

is a health shock that puts the patriarch's life in check, a license in which some have seen a reflection of the accident that Rupert Murdoch suffered on a boat when he was 86 years old.

The political influence that has always been attributed to Rupert Murdoch is also part of the patriarch Logan Roy who plays Brian Cox.

Despite the similarities,

Succession

creator

Jesse Armstrong has denied that his work is inspired by any specific family.

"This is a fictitious family

,

" he

said in an interview with Variety, in which he added that there are "many rich stories about succession, the media and high politics," including that of Rupert Murdoch or

William. Randolph Hearst

,

Robert Maxwell,

and even Queen

Elizabeth

.

When HBO released

Succession

in 2018 the novelty went somewhat unnoticed.

At that moment, the serial attention had its gaze delivered to the final stretch of

Game of Thrones

.

But soon, the series managed to arouse interest and enter the circuits of recommendations in the coffee machines of the offices.

In fact, its second season reached the 2020 Emmy Awards as a clear favorite, after winning

the award for best television drama

in the last edition of the

Golden Globes

.

And the pools were fulfilled: the jackpot for the best drama series, in addition to the recognition of

Jeremy Strong

as the best main actor in a drama - a category in which his co-star Bryan Cox was also nominated - and

Cherry Jones

as the best guest actress;

in addition to the awards for best screenplay (for Jesse Armstrong himself) and best direction (

Andrij Parekh

).

The series that this year has occupied the privileged position of the Emmy that left last year

Game of Thrones

(also from HBO) is

renewed for a third season

.

Family intrigues will continue.

And we will continue to touch the sore with our tongues.
