Several thousand demonstrators gathered on the evening of Sunday, September 20, in Jerusalem, to demand the departure of the Israeli Prime Minister.

Due to the resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, Israel has been re-confined since Friday.

Some demonstrators speak of "political confinement".

Benjamin Netanyahu, indicted for corruption, fraud and breach of trust in three different cases, is struggling to regain the confidence of Israelis who accuse him of mismanaging the health crisis.

"The decision to confine the country a second time only strengthened the determination of the protesters," said France 24 correspondent in Jerusalem, Gwendoline Debono.

"Many fear the economic repercussions," she said, in a country where the unemployment rate already stands at more than 20%.

Protests have been staged every Saturday for nearly three months in front of Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem.

They are allowed in Israel, despite the re-containment, under which Israelis can only leave their homes within a radius of one kilometer to relax, and further away only to go shopping or to work if their profession. is considered essential.

This generalized confinement scheduled for at least three weeks coincides with the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah (New Year, celebrated this weekend), Yom Kippur (day of forgiveness) and Sukkot (feasts of huts).

Israel, a country of nine million people, has recorded 187,396 cases of the new coronavirus, including 1,236 deaths.
