Giant Western Pumpkin Weight Competition Ibaraki September 20, 12:13

An event was held in Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, to compete for the weight of a huge western pumpkin that weighs more than 60 kg produced by a local farmer.

In the Ogawa area in the mountains of Hitachiomiya City, about 40 farms have been producing western pumpkins used for Halloween decorations since 12 years ago, and every year at this time of year, they are proud of their pumpkins. We are holding an event to compete for weight.

On the 20th, about 300 Western pumpkins weighing more than 60 kg were lined up in the parking lot of the product center at the venue, and visitors were looking at the huge pumpkins and taking pictures.

The heaviest pumpkin was chosen by Shoichi Ogushi, who weighed 68.1 kg.

Mr. Ogushi, who came in first, said, "I'm happy with the first place, but this time the pumpkin has become lighter than usual, so I'd like to aim for 100 kg next year."

According to the farmers, this is due to the lack of sunshine in the rainy season and the heat wave in the summer, which makes it smaller than usual, but the color is glossy.

Takashi Kurita, chairman of the hosting group, said, "I'm glad you enjoyed this. I want you to see the rare pumpkins and get well."
