A team of researchers in the United States has developed a robotic arm coated with a rubber material that helps doctors better diagnose diseases and treat patients.

The study team from the University of Houston said, in statements reported by the scientific journal "Science Advances", that they have created a robotic arm covered with a kind of smart skin that can diagnose symptoms using sensors made of rubber semiconductors.

"The new rubber material is easy to manufacture, is similar to biological tissues, and is suitable for use in many applications," said a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston, researcher Yu Bill Cook.

In statements reported by TechExplore, a website that specializes in technology, Yu emphasized that traditional semiconductors are rigid and easy to break, and that their adaptation for use in flexible electronic devices requires certain mechanical modifications, adding that the previously developed rubber semiconductors had some Defects such as the difficulty of charging it with electricity, as well as many complications during the manufacturing process.

He pointed out that the method of manufacturing new rubber semiconductors is easy, as a semiconductor substance is used and dissolved in certain liquids and then dipped in water, and when it expands, the chemical solvent is evaporated from the solution, which leads to the production of a new material with higher conduction capabilities.

The study team said that the new material retains its ability to conduct electricity, even when it is stretched by 50% of its original volume, while human skin, for example, can only be stretched by 30% before it is torn apart.
