Elderly people and people with underlying illnesses may be more likely to be tested for the new coronavirus.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has decided to subsidize up to half of the cost to local governments that inspect elderly people who are at high risk of becoming seriously ill.

The new subsidy will be for elderly people aged 65 and over and those with underlying diseases such as lungs and kidneys.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare basically conducts inspections at public expense for people who are suspected of being infected, such as close contacts, but we also add residents of nursing care facilities in areas where clusters have been confirmed.

Furthermore, we have decided to subsidize the local governments that inspect applicants because there is a high risk that they will become severe even for the elderly who do not meet these conditions and those who have underlying illnesses.

The amount of subsidy is half of the test cost borne by the municipality, and the upper limit is 10,000 yen for PCR test and 3750 yen for antigen test.

The project cost will be about 5.1 billion yen from the reserve fund for the new coronavirus countermeasures.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare says, "By having the local government carry out a wide range of inspections, we want to prevent infected people from becoming seriously ill and prevent the strain on beds."
