As the semi-finals of the African Champions League approach, Patrice Carteron has decided to step down from his post as Zamalek coach in Egypt.

Arrived in December 2019, the French technician would have himself paid the amount of a release clause in the amount of 250,000 dollars (210,000 euros) in order to make himself available.

However, last May, he had yet extended his engagement by a year and a half.

The former coach of TP Mazembe or Raja Casablanca cited "

personal reasons

" for leaving the club on Tuesday September 15th.

A hard blow for the White Knights

Last February, Zamalek won the Egyptian Supercup against the great rival, Al-Ahly, whom Patrice Carteron had coached.

The former Mali coach also won the CAF Supercup against Esperance Tunis with Zamalek.

This departure is certainly a blow for the White Knights before approaching the last four of the Champions League.

In August, Patrice Carteron's men won at the Cairo International Stadium 3-1 against their eternal rival Al-Ahly in the Cairo derby counting for the 21st day of the championship.

Patrice Carteron was not in favor of resuming the Egyptian Premier League.

He had made it known last July.

Like most managers, I didn't want the league to resume.

We wanted a new season to be able to end it at a convenient time without having a busy schedule that would put so much pressure on the players,

”Carteron said at a press conference.

There is no point in ending the current league season in such a short time, but we are forced to play our remaining games because if we don't, the club will receive penalties.

We will use these matches to prepare for the Champions League

[CAF], ”he added.

Patrice Carteron, 50, had been appointed coach of Zamalek, replacing Serbian Micho Sredojević, dismissed for poor results.

He thus became the third foreign coach and the second French after Henri Michel to settle on the bench of the White Knights after having occupied that of their great rivals Al-Ahly, with whom he had lost the Champions League final against Esperance de Tunis in 2018.
