Jean-Pierre Pernaut will pass the torch of the “13 hours” after 32 years -

CHRISTOPHE CHEVALIN / TF1

  • Jean-Pierre Pernaut has announced his decision to quit the

    1 p.m.

    presentation

at the end of the year.

  • Even if it remains in the TF1 group, the channel loses one of its most emblematic faces.

  • But why do the chains rest so much on these figures that seem unbreakable?

This is called a small media earthquake.

After more than thirty years of presentation, Jean-Pierre Pernaut leaves the

13 hours

of TF1.

A news that has made the rounds of the media and which seems to mark the end of an era.

Because when the one we nickname JPP takes control of the news for the first time in 1988, there are only six TV channels, the

Club Dorothée

is still a novelty and

Fort Boyard

does not even exist.

The last big news star on television, the departure of Jean-Pierre Pernaut is a media event.

First of all because he holds the record for longevity at the head of a newscast, but also because viewers are greatly attached to him, as the readers of

20 Minutes

have testified throughout the day.

More than a small screen personality, the journalist has become a member of the family over the decades.

And that is thanks to the strength of the program he embodies.

The presenter of the news, the "showcase" of the channels

If television is a regular medium, the news is a routine program.

With his appointment at a fixed time twice a day, he has become an institution, and one would almost risk saying that he is part of the cultural heritage.

The choice of the person who animates it is therefore essential for the channels.

“It is an immovable moment of reference that punctuates the lives of viewers.

It remains a ritual and it is because it is ritualized that it continues ”, analyzes Thibault Le Hégarat, doctor in contemporary history.

In order not to disturb the public, Jean-Pierre Pernaut will have to be found a successor (or a successor) who will know how to attract sympathy as much as him because it is the image of TF1.

“General-interest channels need to be embodied,” notes Benoît d'Aiguillon, lecturer in information and communication sciences.

Their showcase is the one who presents the news.

It is their head of the gondola.

»Impossible then for them to do without a familiar face, capable of bringing together more than five million people.

A score that very few programs manage to reach regularly today.

The end of the star host?

“He's a personality that viewers come looking for when they watch

1pm

.

They must like it, ”says Thibault Le Hégarat, who also explains that there are economic reasons behind this record for sustainability.

“The presenters are figures who attract the support of millions of viewers, there is no reason to do without these people.

It was also a choice to keep on the air someone who brings together a large audience, ”explains the doctor in contemporary history.

The challenge for TF1 is now to find someone who projects himself in the long term on the seat of the presenter of the

1pm

.

Despite a departure that will mark the history of television, the channel will continue to play on the strong incarnation of its newspaper, because it is what pleases viewers the most.

“The departure of PPDA, the most emblematic figure of the trunk man, which has not put an end to this practice.

So this will continue to be the norm, ”explains Thibault Le Hégarat.

Faced with Jean-Pierre Pernaut and his 32 years at home, Claire Chazal and Patrick Poivre d'Arvor are pale, with respectively 24 and 21 years of JT.

Their departures, which were also media events in their time, are no longer felt today.

Despite the predominant role of JPP, the pattern should repeat itself once again.

“Television is still consumable,” specifies Benoît d'Aiguillon.

He will go down in TV history, he's an excellent journalist but people will get used to it.
