After Apple, it's up to Google to take strong measures to fight against global warming.

The American giant has just announced that it was pursuing a new objective: to use only renewable energies by 2030. A measure that would be implemented in all data centers as well as in the giant's campuses, all over the world , reports 01.net.

The announcement was made by CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post.

This new commitment would have been made following pressure from employees, especially those working in the United States, who are very mobilized on this environmental issue.

Carbon neutrality already achieved

Google has already made progress on this subject.

It claims to have achieved carbon neutrality since 2007, a balance between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and their removal.

Efforts are also being made to reduce emissions in data centers.

To do this, the American company uses compensation methods such as buying carbon credits or planting trees that trap CO2.

The benefits of the latter are, however, visible only several years later.

To achieve this new goal, Google will have to go further.

The CEO plans in particular to

combine solar and wind power sources together, and increase [their] use of energy storage in batteries."

Sundar Pichai also specifies that he will use artificial intelligence for Google's electricity demand and its forecasts.

But the CEO still recognized that several technologies were still to be invented to achieve this ambitious goal.

Sundar Pichai has pledged to invest in renewable energy.

It should also encourage its suppliers and customers to do the same.
