On Saturday, a Robin DR 400-type tourist plane crashed around 2:30 p.m. in the town of Gujan-Mestras, south of the Arcachon Basin, shortly after taking off from Villemarie aerodrome, in La Teste- de-Buch.

“The accident occurred during a first flight and killed four people: the pilot of the plane (43 years old), found about 50 meters from the aircraft still conscious but who died shortly after following his injuries, as well as a father (48 years old) and his two 9-year-old twin daughters whose deaths were noted when the emergency services arrived, ”the prosecutor's office said on Sunday.

The plane crashed into the treetops and crashed into a pine forest before catching fire

The father of the family and his children benefited from a scheduled flight as part of an activity organized by an association, "with the free assistance of the pilot of the aircraft, licensed from the Arcachon Basin Aeroclub (ACBA) .

"

“This pilot took off in weather conditions that seemed favorable to safe flight,” says public prosecutor Frédérique Porterie.

For reasons still unknown and shortly after takeoff, the aircraft quickly lost altitude, struck the treetops and ended up being damaged in a pine forest before catching fire.

The firefighters intervened to control the fire which was spreading in the forest, burning more than 3,000 m2 of pine trees.
