Actress Halle Berry -

Eliot / Starface

Halle Berry may have made history with her Oscar (won for

In the Shadow of Hate

, in 2002) for best actress, the star is not necessarily very comfortable with this award.

As she explained in an interview with

Variety

, the actress, who became the first woman of color to win the award, believed things would change for black actresses after her victory.

“It breaks my heart.

The day after (of my victory), I was like 'Wow, I opened a door'.

But the fact that no one else can do it, I'm like, 'Was that an important moment, or just an important moment for me?'

I wanted to believe this was the start of something bigger than me.

It seemed bigger than me, in large part because I was thinking that some people should have done it before me, ”she explained.

Not yet

Eighteen years later, only white actresses have won the trophy year after year.

Yet, according to Halle Berry, there is no shortage of talented black actresses in Hollywood.

“I thought Cynthia Erivo (the

Harriet

star

) was going to win last year.

I also thought Ruth Negga (nominated in 2016) had a good chance of winning too.

I think there were arguments for some of these women winning, that they should have won.

I was hoping for them, but it did not happen, I have no answer, ”laments the actress.

This Oscar for best actress, far from having exploded her career, even led her to play in what is today considered one of the worst films of the last twenty years:

Catwoman

.

“I thought it was a chance for a woman of color to play a superhero.

Why not try ?

But I remember wondering, 'But why doesn't Catwoman save the world like Batman or Superman?

Why does she only save women from a cream that makes their face crack? ''.

But I was only an actress, not the director, I had no say, ”recalls the star.

Today, after a long slump, Halle Berry has come back up.

She also returns with a new film that she directed herself,

Bruised

, in which she plays the role of an MMA fighter who decides to relaunch her career.

A tailor-made role?
