"Telephone relay service" will start next year Considering securing an interpreter Hurry up at 7:17 on September 11

The national "telephone relay service" will start next year, which allows people with hearing impairments to make calls through simultaneous interpretation of sign language.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is urgently considering how to secure highly skilled interpreters in case of emergency calls.

The "Telephone Relay Service" is a public service that allows deaf people to make calls on their PCs and smartphones through simultaneous sign language interpretation and text chat, and the government plans to start it next year.

Prior to the start of the service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications heard opinions from groups of people with hearing impairments on the 10th.

Among them, there was an opinion that it is necessary to convey the contents quickly and accurately in an emergency such as an illness or an accident, and that sign language interpreting requires a certain level of skill.

Based on these opinions, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has decided to urgently consider how to secure highly skilled interpreters.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications plans to make this service available 24 hours a day, and plans to consider whether voice recognition technology and AI = artificial intelligence can be used to reduce the burden on interpreters.
