"Too big", "Too ugly".

You have surely seen this kind of comment on social media before, or you may have even been a victim.

Far from being innocuous remarks, it is in reality “bodyshaming”.

An Anglo-Saxon term for criticism directed at a person about their shape, size or appearance of their body.

On social networks, many celebrities, very exposed are victims.

This is the case of actor Chadwick Boseman, the star of the film

Black Panther

, who died in August 2020 from colon cancer.

He had posted a video a few months before, where he appeared emaciated and had then been the target of many mockeries from Internet users, nicknamed him "crack panther".

The actor ultimately deleted this post.

Anonymity and impunity

This type of behavior is far from isolated.

According to a Yougov study, published in 2019, 3 in 10 French people have already been victims of "bodyshaming", and among millennials, very active on social networks, the number of victims reaches 50%.

For the sociologist Jean-François Amadieu, author of

Société du semblance

(ed. Odile Jacob), this can be explained by “the anonymity that reigns on these platforms” but also by “the absence of criminal proceedings” for the authors of these comments.

To fight against this phenomenon, singer Billie Eilish recently undressed on stage and gave a speech to denounce the “objectification” of bodies.
