Journalists in Algeria, a dangerous situation

Khaled Drareni followed for several months the demonstrations of Hirak, the popular protest movement of Algerian power.

The journalist was sentenced in August to three years in prison, after being charged with "inciting unarmed assembly" and "undermining national unity".

His appeal trial is being held on Tuesday, September 8.

On this occasion, several mobilizations have been organized in recent days, in Tunis, Washington (and therefore Paris), to defend press freedom.

This morning, the presenters of French newspapers and TV programs gave him unprecedented support.

Bernard de la Villardière explains to us why he wanted to participate in this gathering this morning: "It is important that I am there with my colleagues, in particular to express our solidarity, beyond Khaled Drareni, to all the independent journalists who work in Algeria under threat of arrest ", explains the journalist and presenter of

.

"They are either because they made remarks which displeased in high places, or because they work for an independent media, or because they did not receive the official accreditation, which is not delivered only in small quantities. Which is a way for the authorities to put pressure on journalists and make their work more dangerous. "

This demonstration to defend press freedom comes a week after Emmanuel Macron's outburst against journalist Georges Malbrunot.

Many journalists had shouted an attack on press freedom.

For Bernard de la Villardière, "we must be very vigilant when it comes to freedom of expression and freedom of the press", he indicates, before recalling that the situation of journalists in France "has nothing to do "with those of their colleagues in Algeria.
