Queues are over.

Also the discomfort of visiting a temple where restoration works currently occupy the main entrance.

And, of course, the risks of covid-19 to which one is exposed in a concentration of people like the one who visits the

cathedral of Santiago de Compostela every day

.

The Barrié Foundation, distinguished for its important role in the restoration of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and its portico, considered the

Sistine Chapel

of Romanesque art, has launched an

app

that allows you to get closer to this monument as never before.

Through a superzoom with

gigapixel resolution

, it allows the face-to-face vision of its figures to an unusual detail.

With a simple click of the mouse, for example, the teeth of old musicians or the details of their instruments, located eleven meters above the ground, can be viewed in detail.

The app can also be explored on a special website.

The Pórtico de la Gloria of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is

one of the most outstanding monuments of European art

that, over the centuries, had deteriorated in a way that at the beginning of the third millennium threatened irreparable damage.

Under the patronage of the Barrié Foundation, between 2006 and 2018, what should perhaps be considered the most complex restoration of an artistic monument carried out in Europe was undertaken.

Long and complex restoration

It has been a long and ambitious process, which involved not only the

restoration of the Portico

, but also part of the cathedral, such as its towers and roofs, whose deterioration was the main cause of the evils that afflicted the creation of Mateo.

The restoration was completed in July 2018, and visits have since been allowed, albeit with a limited number of people, in order to avoid deterioration of the monument.

The

gigapixel image

launched now, allows you to explore the dozens of figures and motifs created by Master Mateo in the 12th century to decorate the portico of the main entrance of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The

digitization

of the approximately 200m2 of surface that the monument covers, has required 14 hours of uninterrupted capture, during which more than 2,700 photographs have been taken with Madpixel ROB, the intelligent gigapixel robot for digitizing works of art.

The image is complemented with

different interactive narratives

, in which the iconography of the Portico, the materials and techniques used in its construction and the instruments that appear reproduced in the stone, including their sounds, can be interpreted, as well as the restoration process mentioned.

The

app

is free

and can be downloaded from the Sore App and Google Play, both for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and for Android smartphones and tablets.

It is available in Spanish, Galician and English.

Developed on Madpixel's SECOND CANVAS platform, it is the same tool used by 75 museums and institutions around the world, including the Prado Museum and the National Library of Spain, which allows an unprecedented approach to the world of art.
