South Korea is on alert.

At least one person has been killed and more than 2,000 others evacuated to temporary shelters following the arrival of powerful Typhoon Maysak, authorities said Thursday.

The storm made landfall Tuesday morning in Busan on the south coast, ripping up trees and traffic lights and flooding streets.

A woman was killed when a strong squall blew the windows of her apartment in Busan, and a 60-year-old was injured when an outdoor refrigerator fell.

More than 2,200 people have taken refuge in temporary shelters and some 120,000 homes have been deprived of electricity overnight in the south of the country and on Jeju Island.

Two powerful weather systems are bearing down on western Japan from different directions.

Maysak is now heading east of the peninsula towards the Sea of Japan with winds that can reach peaks of 140 km / h.

"The impact of the typhoon on our country will gradually decrease", however reassured the South Korean weather services, announcing heavy rains and winds in the east of the country.

North Korea on alert

Natural disasters generally cause more damage in North Korea than in South Korea, in particular because of the fragility of North Korean infrastructure.

The country is also very vulnerable to the risk of flooding due to deforestation.

The public media in the North are also on alert, broadcasting live images of the situation.

"The hallmark of this typhoon is that it brought heavy precipitation," a North Korean Central Television reporter reported from a flooded street in Wonsan Port.

On the night of September 2-3, "the total precipitation reached 200 millimeters," he added.

Maysak is the second typhoon of the week on the peninsula.

North Korean leader Kim jong-un visited an agricultural region that had suffered from Typhoon Bavi last week, saying he was relieved to see that the damage was "less than expected".
