JM Coetzee's first camera was a £ 40 Wega, an imitation of the Leica, which he purchased by post.

It was 1955. Coetzee lived where he was born, in the suburb of Plumstead, in Cape Town, South Africa.

There he founded the photography club of the Marist school of Saint Joseph

and managed to get the management of the center to allow him to use the general notice board to hang his photographs.

At some point, taking photos became fashionable among students.JM Co
