"Blood Machines" by Seth Ickerman - Logical Pictures- Shudder- Rumble Fish

  • With its impressive special effects and its small budget, “Blood Machines” amazes and entertains.
  • This homage to the blockbusters of the 1980s is in line with “Star Wars” and the films of Mario Bava.
  • It will be screened throughout France thanks to the GCR cinema circuit.

It's not just Tenet to defend the colors of science fiction in theaters. Blood Machines by Seth Ickerman, a French film produced in complete independence, will be distributed in about fifty cinemas on the CGR circuit (73 cinemas throughout France) from this Tuesday, the date which corresponds to their event releases. Behind this pseudonym hides a French duo, Savitri Joly-Gonfard and Raphaël Hernandez, who created this sexy and visually impressive futuristic trip with four hands.

“We are very grateful to Christopher Nolan, explains Raphaël Hernandez to 20 Minutes . The Blood Machines trailer comes before Tenet and he offers us, without knowing it, a good visibility. “Seth Ickerman's Lilliputian means of promoting his film have nothing to do with Tenet's pharaonic marketing, but they correspond well to the spirit of the pair.

Funded by fans

“Going out was unexpected! However, we dreamed of it because our visual and sound universe takes on its full dimension in cinema, ”insists Savitri Joly-Gonfard. This fifty-minute medium-length film, an unusual format, multiplies the stunning special effects around two scrap dealers launched into space in the footsteps of a very special young woman. Seth Ickerman, two-headed creator, devoted three years of his life to creating the film financed by Internet users of the participatory site Kickstarter “We felt a desire for a different cinema in a genre difficult to produce in France,” explains Raphaël Hernandez. Blood Machines is screened with a fascinating "making of" which reveals the ambitions and the secrets of the making of the two friends.

Two lives in parathesis

The techno soundtrack of Carpenter Brut for which they had already produced the impressive Turbo Killer music video is an important component of this festival of color and sensation. “We wanted to pay tribute to the cinema of the 1980s with which we grew up, insists Raphaël Hernandez. Make a film that is both popular and artistic. “Supported by several French special effects firms, the duo achieved a tour de force between Star Wars and Mario Bava with a meager budget. “  Blood Machines could only exist because we were passionate enough to put our lives between parathesis and giving everything”, says Savitri Joly-Gonfard

Despite the Covid-19

Their success in various international festivals and the support of the American platform Shudder allowed them to reach a wider audience. “The kind of films we make frightens French producers,” acknowledges Savitri Joly-Gonfard. The duo do not count on Blood Machines to get rich, but they hope to have more money for the future. “I think audiences who are interested in the type of alternative cinema we do will go to the cinema despite Covid-19,” adds the director. First planned for a few days' exploitation, Blood Machines is already receiving new requests from other rooms, which augurs well for a great success.
