The urban artist Banksy financed a new boat to save migrants in the Mediterranean, which is already in the area and has rescued 89 people, according to the British newspaper The Guardian .

The vessel, named Louise Michel after the 19th-century French anarchist and decorated with graffiti by the British artist, set sail on August 18 from the Spanish port of Burriana , near Valencia, the newspaper revealed Thursday night.

Secretly chartered, it has already rescued 89 people, including 14 women and two children, in the central Mediterranean on Thursday, the media said.

"Now he is looking for a safe sea port to disembark the passengers or transfer them to a European coast guard vessel."

The newspaper published several images of the ship, painted pink and white, with Banksy graffiti showing a girl wearing a life jacket and a heart-shaped float.

The crew is made up of a dozen members, "European activists with long experience in search and rescue at sea." Its captain is Pia Klemp, a German human rights activist known for having led other rescue ships, such as Sea-Watch 3.

The boat is an old French customs ship . At 31 meters in length, it is smaller than other humanitarian ships but much faster.

The operation was staged between London, Berlin and Borriana, and Banksy would not be on board, according to The Guardian .
