[Poverty alleviation story] A "chicken commander" came to the village of Jingpo, Yunnan

[Background] Hwa Village is a Jingpo village located on the border between China and Myanmar. It faces the Burmese village across a Nanwan River.

[Explanation] In 2009, Duan Biqing was assigned here as a village official after graduating from university. In order to change the face of poverty in the local area, he led the people to find ways to increase income and become rich. Recently, the reporter met Duan Biqing, who was called "Chicken Commander" by local villagers, in Huwa Village, Ruili City, Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan Province.

Because after I came here in 2009, our entire village was very poor. At that time, our per capita net income was thousands of dollars. It was very poor. There were no electrical appliances in the house, and we lived in thatched huts. I wanted to do it for them more or less. Something.

[Explanation] Duan Biqing discovered that although Hwa Village is poor, the air here is clean and the forest is dense, suitable for the development of large-scale chicken farming. But in traditional concepts, villagers do not believe that raising chickens can make you rich.

[Explanation] In desperation, he decided to start by himself, took out the only house in the family and mortgaged 200,000 yuan (RMB, the same below) from the bank, rented a piece of idle wasteland in the village, found some partners, and started the business. From the chicken farm.

[Explanation] After about three years of hard work, his farm has gone from "half of the first 1,000 chickens dead" to "almost 100% alive", and the market has gradually opened up, and high-quality free-range chickens have been welcomed by the market. . By 2013, one month's gross income can be 30,000 to 40,000 yuan.

[Explanation] At this time, the villagers changed from the previous suspicion and cynicism to curiosity and envy, and everyone called him "Chicken Commander". Duan Biqing knew in his heart that the time had come for him to bring the whole village out of poverty.

We hope that from the side, we can pass their scattered land, their idle labor force, through these things, and then add some fragmentary income to him. It was such an idea at the time, and then let them slowly change some of their traditional concepts. .

[Explanation] In April 2014, the Huwashan Chicken Breeding Professional Cooperative in Ruili City, Yunnan Province was announced. Duan Biqing understands that quality and sales alone are not enough. Farms must establish their own brands to effectively resist market risks.

Because we have brought a lot of farmers, the outside market prices are not stable, and we hope to provide our farmers with a relatively stable income, so that they will be less risky, so we have to create a brand to make our channels more stable a little.

[Explanation] In this way, Duan Biqing, who has been a college student village official for 6 years, established his own brand with the concept of "village official chicken". He invited people to design LOGO and outer packaging, opened exclusive stores in Ruili and Mangshi, and cooperated with an e-commerce company in Beijing to carry out online sales.

[Explanation] In 2019, the cooperative's contracted farmers have a total output value of nearly 10 million yuan, creating a net profit of more than 2 million yuan, and an average household income of more than 12,000 yuan. Radiation has driven about 8,000 local people to get rid of poverty and become rich. Duan Biqing also won the "National Poverty Alleviation Award".

[Explanation] Duan Biqing is no longer a "village official", but a well-known private entrepreneur in Ruili City. But he still takes root in the small Jingpo cottage, and likes to be called "Chicken Commander".

  [Concurrent] Duan Biqing

I have been a village official here since 2009. We have more exchanges with our villagers in production and life. We are not only partners, we are also friends, we even more. Are relatives. Through these things, we hope to connect more closely with them, and we will naturally have some deeper connections.
