The coronavirus is paying off big. French supermarket chains have already sold 300 million euros worth of masks since May 4, market research specialist Nielsen revealed Thursday.

"With 14 million euros during the week of August 17 to 23, the turnover achieved by large-scale distribution" for the sale of masks "has now reached the bar of 300 million euros made since May 4" , Nielsen said in a statement. These figures relate to disposable and washable masks sold in hypermarkets, supermarkets, “drives” and convenience stores.

Upcoming sales increase

The sale "starts again on the rise, which should be confirmed this week and (the) next week with the start of the school year", the mask being compulsory for all adults at school, and for all students from college.

In July, Nielsen carried out a study according to which "98% of French people" now have masks at home, whether surgical or washable fabric. "With significant storage in some: 15% of households with surgical masks have more than 50 in them", specified the specialist.
