The Italian actress Monica Bellucci plays the Swedish film star Anita Ekberg. She tells the newspaper Corriere della Sera that the film explores parts of the star's life that a younger audience may not be familiar with.

The Girl in the Fountain is directed by Antongiulio Panizzi. The title alludes to the iconic film scene where Anita Ekberg bathes in the fountain Fontana di Trevi in Rome. She starred opposite Marcello Mastroianni in Frederico Fellini's 1960 film The Sweet Life.
