The overflow of a tank at the Kastellin biogas plant is the source of pollution in the Alder. - Fred TANNEAU / AFP

A week after the pollution of the Alder, the prefect of Finistère ruled by suspending from this Tuesday the activity of the methanizer at the origin of this incident which deprived of drinking water 180,000 people. “It will be lifted when all the conditions are met. It is for the protection of everyone ”, declared the prefect Philippe Mahé, quoted by the regional daily newspaper Le Télégramme .

The association for the defense of consumers CLCV also announced in a press release that it had "filed a complaint against X with the public prosecutor in application of articles L 216-6 and L 432-2 of the environmental code" which punishes the discharge of harmful substances. The CLCV believes "that consumers would not understand that those responsible for this pollution are not prosecuted and heavily punished". It "asks that drastic measures be taken by the operator to guarantee the absolute safety of drinking water, while global warming dangerously weakens the water resource", according to the press release.

A technical incident causes the tank filled with digestate to overflow

The pollution that occurred last week is due to the overflow of a digestate tank at the Kastellin biogas plant following a technical incident. Between 300 and 400 m3 of digestate overflowed from the tank, according to the manager of the plant. The biogas plant is located about 1 km from the Aulne, a coastal river, and upstream from a drinking water plant. The flow of the digestate in the Alder caused a surge in ammonia, rendering the water unsuitable for consumption.

Inaugurated in 2018 by Sébastien Lecornu, then Secretary of State for the Ecological Transition, the Kastellin biogas plant injects into the gas network methane produced from manure, slurry or food industry waste. The digestate, organic matter resulting from the anaerobic digestion process, is then used as fertilizer spread on agricultural land.

Among the municipalities affected by the pollution were notably Châteaulin (5,774 inhabitants), a large part of Quimper (63,000 inhabitants) and the very touristic peninsula of Crozon.
