The Berlinale , one of the world's leading film festivals, will stop rewarding actors separately according to their gender , it announced its direction on Monday. Starting next year, the Silver Bear will be awarded for best leading and supporting performance, instead of "best actress" and "best actor." "Stopping separating the awards according to the sex of the actors is a signal for a more egalitarian awareness of the genders in the film industry", explained the two directors of the Festival, Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian . Likewise, in the next edition a new "Silver Bear Jury Prize" will be awarded.

Along with Cannes and Venice, the Berlinale is one of the largest film festivals in the world. Organized every year in February in the German capital, the 2020 edition was able to be held, unlike its French counterpart, which was scheduled in May and was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Italian festival, for its part, should start next week, but under a strict sanitary protocol.

The organizers of the German festival assured that the next edition (from February 11 to 21, 2021) will be held "physically" , despite the pandemic, and "the greatest possible security" will be guaranteed. "In the coming weeks" adjustments will be defined "in the structure of the festival, the programming of the films and the total number of films presented", the festival has announced.
