The Lyon police are calling for witnesses after the assault on a teenager at Place Bellecour. - C. Girardon / 20 Minutes

A call for witnesses was launched Monday evening, a few hours after the opening of an investigation into the assault of a teenager in Lyon. The facts took place Friday at 11 p.m. Place Bellecour, near the Tourist Office. The victim's entourage, who relayed the case on Facebook, say Augustine, 17, was beaten by a group of five individuals as he sought to protect girls being bullied.

The police, who did not receive any call Friday evening to report this attack (just like the firefighters), are therefore looking for witnesses who would have attended the scene. Anyone likely to provide information to investigators in order to identify suspects or shed light on the course of the evening, is invited to contact the police station of the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon.

The teenager's assault was quickly picked up by many far-right or nationalist activists on social networks, even before the judicial or police authorities confirmed the facts. A support group calling for #JusticePourAugustin was also launched on Facebook by the boy's relatives. It had more than 8,000 members this Tuesday morning.
