The measurement equivalent to 1,000 times the height of the Annapurna or slightly more than twice the length of the Missippi. A total of 8,000 kilometers of the Spanish geography are bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the Cantabrian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea . This, added to the diversity of landscapes and coastal places, difficult to find in other countries, have made Spain the favorite vacation destination for foreign and local tourists looking to spend their holidays near the sea.

This wide range of beaches, capable of satisfying travelers of all kinds, has made the coast one more year, despite the pandemic, one of the main attractions this summer . The Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, the Costa Brava, the Costa Blanca ... The impact of the coronavirus is already a reality in a year in which it is more difficult to leave the country and receive foreign travelers, businesses located on the coast expect tourism from the interior ends up replacing that from other nations.

A world reference

The Spanish coastline is an international reference, both for the attractiveness of its climate, somewhat warmer than in the rest of Europe, and for the conditions and services of its beaches. The European Foundation for Environmental Education has awarded the blue flag to 589 of the 662 candidates (89% effective) for meeting the criteria that this organization requires in terms of environmental information and management, water quality, safety and services. . A total of 23 of them have achieved it for the first time in 2020. It is the country in the world with more of these awards ahead of Greece, with 514; Turkey, with 508; and France, with 507, a ranking that it has led since 1987.

Within Spain, the Valencian Community is the autonomous region with the highest number of blue flags (134) , followed by Galicia (107), Andalusia (100) and Catalonia (95). In the Valencian Community, the Costa Blanca, which covers the entire Alicante coastline , is one of the areas that usually receives more tourism in summer, especially from the United Kingdom and Germany. In its 244 kilometers you can find more crowded coastal cities, such as Alicante and Benidorm , other smaller ones, such as Denia or Altea , and a total of 73 blue flags this season , the tourist destination in Spain that accumulates the most.

As in many other places, the busiest beaches on the Costa Blanca have had to adapt to guarantee safety distances and reduce the risk of Covid-19 infections . "Despite the particularities of the moment in which we find ourselves, we are making all possible efforts to make the safety of visitors and residents compatible with continuing to offer the best possible service," says José Mancebo, executive director of the Provincial Tourism Board of the Costa Blanca. "We ask everyone the maximum responsibility without giving up who we are, one of the most internationalized provinces, where tourism accounts for almost 15% of GDP."

Security before everything

A little further north, in the province of Valencia, Gandía also extreme measures in its six kilometers of beach both for visitors and for all the personnel who work there. In fact, it has come to be classified as the safest beach in Spain . “In addition to limiting the capacity to 55,000 people , we give everyone who comes to the beach a kit with four pegs and a tape to delimit an area of 16 square meters . We have also created gateways to enter and exit the venue; contact sports prohibited on the beach; footbaths, showers and toilets have been uninstalled to avoid sources of contagion; and we have incorporated the figure of the beach informant to guarantee compliance with the rules, "says Vicent Mascarell, the city's Tourism and Beaches Councilor.

Unlike the Costa Blanca, Gandía traditionally receives a lot of inland tourism , to the point that it is colloquially known as Madrid beach , due to the number of travelers it receives from the capital and the center of the country. «80% of the tourists who come to Gandía come from inland areas of Spain. Obviously, the impact in these months is going to be irreparable, since we had planned to open the beaches on March 13, just after the state of alarm was decreed. But what was a weakness can now become our strength and we hope that July, August, September and even October will help us make up for lost months, ”explains Mascarell.

The islands, the most affected

On the other hand, other areas of Spain such as the archipelagos, both the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands have been more affected by this new situation. "The islands are the ones that are suffering the most from the consequences of the pandemic this summer, especially the Canary Islands, where currently reserves do not reach 15% of the figures they used to have at this point in other years , especially due to geographical distance", Marichal points out.

Fuerteventura has unique beaches CANARY ISLANDS TOURISM

Even so, the president of Cehat is optimistic: « In March and April we thought that there would not even be a summer season . Despite the data, in recent weeks there is more movement and we must be optimistic . And it is to be expected that tourism in the Canary Islands will rise since, in addition to having a tropical climate that maintains a constant temperature between 20 and 30 degrees throughout the year , it has one of the widest coastline offers in Spain.

Nudist beaches, for athletes, for nature lovers or other more familiar ones . Of particular note are the Playa de Maspalomas , on the island of Gran Canaria, bordered by the Special Natural Reserve of the Dunes of Maspalomas and with an area to the west for nudism, or the Playa de Telesitas , in Tenerife, a paradisiacal place with crystal clear waters and shallow waters that are always calm thanks to the breakwater that was installed, which makes it the ideal beach to go with children.

It is inevitable that the pandemic will affect the coastal tourism sector. But the wide range of beaches for all tastes that Spain has can, as far as possible, help to counteract this effect .
