On August 20, the flood peak of the “Yangtze River 2020 No. 5 Flood” officially arrived at the Three Gorges Project, with a flow of up to 75,000 cubic meters per second, which was the largest flood peak the Three Gorges Project has encountered since its construction in 2003.

According to the latest flood control dispatching instructions, the Three Gorges Dam has opened 11 flood discharge holes, and the outflow flow rate is 49,200 cubic meters per second, with a peak shaving rate of 34.4%. This flood process refreshed many records since the construction of the Three Gorges Project: the largest flood peak and the largest discharge volume.

Since the flood season this year, the Yangtze River Basin has had a lot of precipitation, a long process, and a large amount of rainfall. The total accumulated precipitation in the basin has exceeded 1998, ranking second since there were hydrological records.

In order to effectively deal with the floods, the Three Gorges Group strictly implemented the flood control instructions of the Ministry of Water Resources and the Yangtze River Committee to fight floods. The Three Gorges Project pre-emptied the reservoir in advance, and the reservoir water level dropped by more than 10 meters, and 80% of the flood control storage capacity was reserved. At the same time, the upstream Wudongde Reservoir and the Xiluodu-Xiangjiaba cascade reservoirs are fully used to intercept floods to effectively help the Three Gorges Project to intercept floods.
