[Explanation] On August 20, the flood peak water level of the Yangtze River Chongqing Cuntan Station was 191.62 meters, which exceeded the guaranteed water level by 8.12 meters. This water level has reached the highest water level since the station was established.

Since August 11, the Yangtze River, Jialing River, and Fujian River have experienced major floods one after another. The Jialing River has formed the No. 1 and No. 2 floods in 2020, and the Yangtze River has formed the No. 4 and No. 5 floods in 2020. Among them, the Yangtze River's No. 5 flood in 2020 and the Jialing River's No. 2 flood in 2020 are the rare extreme floods in Chongqing's history.

The flood peaks crossed the border, Chongqing Chaotianmen Wharf, Chongqing Nanbin Road, and Chongqing Jiabin Road were flooded. Several wholesale markets in Chongqing Caiyuanba were also flooded over the roofs. The local sub-district office arranged staff to be on duty 24 hours a day to fully protect the lives of citizens. Property safety.

[Concurrent] Li Lizhong, a staff member of Caiyuanba Street, Yuzhong District, Chongqing

I was on duty at 8 o'clock in the evening yesterday (19th). Our purpose of staying here is for the safety of the citizens.

[Explanation] According to the flood prevention and drought relief experts of the Chongqing Emergency Management Bureau, the cause of this catastrophic flood is the excessive rainfall in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and Jialing River, and the superposition of the two floods. Just two days after the Yangtze River's No. 4 flood peak in 2020, and the flood process has not yet ended, the No. 5 flood has formed in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The water levels at Ciqikou Station on the Jialing River and Caiyuanba Station on the Yangtze River have not yet fallen below the warning water level. The water level at Cuntan Station on the Yangtze River has fallen to the warning water level within 10 hours. The water level has risen again and the river bottom water is high.

According to incomplete statistics, this round of flooding has caused more than 120,000 people in Jiangbei, Banan, Jiangjin, Tongnan, Tongliang, Hechuan and other districts and counties of Chongqing to be affected, and more than 60,000 people have been relocated in emergency. At present, relevant departments and districts and counties in Chongqing are making every effort to cope with this round of flooding.
