British actor Ben Cross, known for his starring role in the Oscar-winning film "Chariots of Fire," died Tuesday at age 72.

Cross, who played Jewish sprinter Harold Abrahams in the 1981 drama to overcome anti-Semitism and triumph at the 1924 Olympics, was also known to younger audiences for his role as Spock's father in the "Star Trek" relaunch. in 2009.

"Ben passed away suddenly today after a short illness," his agent in Los Angeles confirmed to AFP, without specifying where he died. According to specialized media, he lived in Vienna.

Cross, a veteran London-born stage actor, made his big screen debut alongside Sean Connery and Michael Caine in Richard Attenborough's 1977 World War II epic " A Far Bridge ."

After a successful stage on the stage with the musical " Chicago ", he was cast in "Chariots of Fire" along with Ian Holm and John Gielgud. The film won four Academy Awards , including Best Picture and Best Original Score, although Cross was not nominated.

He then continued to work in theater, film and television until the end of his life, playing Sarek in JJ Abrams' " Star Trek. "

Cross had just finished filming on the thriller " The Devil's Light, " and will appear in the Netflix romance drama "Last Letter From Your Lover" later this year. She is survived by her two children, Theo and Lauren , who wrote on Facebook that she was "totally heartbroken."
