More than 3,000 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in France in the past 24 hours, one of the strongest increases since May. This upsurge in the virus is pushing the authorities to step up health measures and new rules for businesses will be announced in the coming days. The sports world is not spared either, and suspicions of cases at OM as well as contaminations in several French clubs cast doubt on the resumption of Ligue 1 on Friday. Follow the evolution of the situation live.

The main information to remember:

  • 3,015 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in France between Saturday and Sunday, an unprecedented number of contaminations in 24 hours
  • Several cases are suspected within the OM club, leaving uncertainty about the resumption of Ligue 1
  • The virus is increasingly circulating in Latin America
  • To stem a rebound in the epidemic, general elections postponed in New Zealand
  • More than 760,000 people have died since the start of the crisis, 50,000 in India

A record of daily contaminations since May which worries the authorities

The health situation continues to worsen: 3,015 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in France in the last 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health France posted online Sunday evening. The one-week positivity rate continues to increase to 2.6%. The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care, roughly stable since the end of July, remains identical to that of Saturday, or 376. France now has 30,410 people who have died from Covid-19 since the start of the epidemic.

The number of new cases of Covid-19, which is on the rise again this summer, greatly worries the authorities who fear a second wave. More and more cities now require the wearing of masks in certain outdoor areas. And the question of the mask in collective closed places becomes recurrent. The government thus wants to modify, "by the end of August", the health rules to contain the coronavirus in business, in particular via the "compulsory wearing of a mask" in certain situations, indicates the Minister of Labor, Elisabeth Borne, in a interview in the Sunday Journal . In addition, the French are much more worried about the health risk linked to the coronavirus (53%) than the economic risk caused by the spread of the disease (29%), according to an Ifop poll for the weekly.

The resumption of Ligue 1 threatened?

Five days before the restart of Ligue 1, uncertainty hangs over French football, affected by numerous Covid-19 contaminations within clubs, to the point that the first day, next weekend, may be highly disturbed, on the grounds as well as in the stands. At least 37 L1 players from 11 clubs have tested positive for Covid-19 in recent weeks. The vast majority of them contracted the virus after resuming training in June, resulting in more or less solitary confinement depending on the case and cascading cancellations of friendly matches. Marseille has so far deplored only one positive case, but OM announced on Sunday evening three new suspicions of Covid-19, which could jeopardize the inaugural match of Ligue 1 scheduled for Friday against Saint-Etienne.

Le Puy du Fou did not benefit from "any privilege", says Bachelot

The Puy du Fou, authorized to accommodate up to 9,000 people for a show despite the restrictions linked to the epidemic, "has not benefited from any privilege," Minister of Culture Roselyne Bachelot assured Sunday. "I understand the emotion and the anger of professionals and artists who had to cancel their activities and it is a real heartbreak," said the minister on the Parisian website  While any event bringing together more than 5,000 people is supposed to be prohibited, the Vendée park has received a derogation from the prefecture. This decision has strongly ruffled the world of culture. "It's incomprehensible", blurted Jean-Michel Ribes, director of the Parisian theater of the Rond Point, on Europe 1. "I think that there, there will be a real question to the government and he will have to answer it and that he explains, "continued the showman.

Historic drop in Japan's GDP

Japan's GDP collapsed 7.8% between April and June from the previous quarter under the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, a historic plunge marking a third straight quarter of contraction for the world's third-largest economy . It is the first recession in Japan since 2015. It is also the most brutal drop in GDP in the country since comparable data were put in place in 1980. Globally, the euro zone also suffered in the second quarter a decline of 12.1% of its GDP, weighed down by the even greater plunges of the French, Italian and Spanish economies.

The virus is spreading in several Latin American countries

The coronavirus pandemic continues to progress in several Latin American countries, with in particular the crossing on Sunday of the threshold of 15,000 dead in Colombia and a record of contaminations in Peru. Colombia has 468,332 cases of contamination as of Sunday. This country of 50 million inhabitants is the fourth in Latin America in terms of deaths and in terms of contagions. Peru announced on Sunday that it had registered more than 10,000 new cases in 24 hours. Bolivia exceeded 100,000 contaminations and 4,000 deaths on Sunday. New Zealand elections postponed, mask compulsory in Italy

In an attempt to stem this second wave, health measures are being amplified around the globe. New Zealand's parliamentary elections are postponed for four weeks due to a return of the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday. Hailed for its effective response to the first epidemic wave, New Zealand has achieved the feat of not recording any new cases for 102 days before experiencing a resumption of contaminations since early August. The country's main city, Auckland, has been re-defined until August 26.

Italy, for its part, announced on Sunday the closure of open-air discos and made the wearing of masks compulsory in the evening in public places. The Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, signed a decree taking effect Monday, which orders the wearing of the mask between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am in the public places where the "formation of groups" occurs. The decree also suspends discos and open-air nightclubs.
