The obligation to wear a mask outdoors is spreading in many French cities. On Thursday, the Puy de Dôme prefecture announced that it would be compulsory from Saturday in outdoor spaces in four towns in the department, including the historic center of Clermont-Ferrand.

⚠️IMPORTANT ⚠️

From this Saturday, August 15, in order to minimize the risk of an epidemic resumption of # Covid19, the wearing of a mask will be compulsory in several public spaces in Puy-de-Dôme likely to bring together a large number of people. https://t.co/4u4hBe4Jm1 pic.twitter.com/qdCXLuJ695

"Like the entire national territory, the Puy de Dôme has been affected for three weeks by a regular and relatively large increase in the number of cases" of coronavirus, the prefecture explained in a press release.

Measures in force at least until August 31

However, these four cities (Clermont-Ferrand, Riom, Montpeyroux and Le Mont-Dore) are "likely to bring together a large number of people in small spaces, making compliance with barrier measures very uncertain", underlined the prefecture, which plans to apply these measures until August 31, or even extend "depending on the assessment" of the health situation.

In Clermont-Ferrand, wearing a mask will be compulsory in the historic center and within the grounds of the Lecoq garden, in addition to the markets and flea markets. “Brightly colored” posters and markings on the ground will be set up around them to help residents and tourists over the age of eleven to identify the areas concerned. Any offender is liable to a fine of 135 euros.
