18 people have had to be hospitalized in the province of Seville for a viral infection other than the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Those affected have developed meningoencephalitis, the origin of which is being investigated by the Andalusian Health Service.

The viral meningoencephalitis is a disease of the central nervous system that is caused by a virus that causes inflammation of the meninges and brain.

According to Amaya Jimeno, specialist in Infectious Diseases of the Murcian Health Service, the most frequent symptoms of meningoencephalitis are headache, fever, nausea or vomiting. Other neurological signs and symptoms with which it occurs are neck stiffness, disorientation, and if it is severe, altered level of alertness and consciousness .

There are several agents that can cause this condition. In the case of Seville, one of the hypotheses used is that it is an emerging disease associated with mosquito bites.

Due to this, the Junta de Andalucía has issued a series of tips to, as far as possible, reduce exposure to this possible source of contagion. Among other measures, they recommend:

  • Use mosquito nets on windows and doors
  • Try not to stay outdoors between dusk and dawn
  • Try to leave the light off
  • Follow correct body hygiene daily
  • Avoid strong perfumes
  • Wear clothing that covers the skin as much as possible and shake it before use if it has been laid outside
  • Make proper use of repellants, strictly following the recommendations on the mode and frequency of use described by the manufacturer. If you use sun cream, apply it first, let it soak in for twenty minutes, and then apply the mosquito repellent.

"All the necessary samples have been taken and sent to the reference laboratory, with four being negative for the main bacteria and viruses, as well as PCR for Nile fever, Tuscany and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, with IgM for Nile fever virus also negative, "said the Junta de Andalucía in a statement. "We are waiting to know the result of the rest."

Furthermore, " epidemiological surveys have been carried out to detect some common link and the municipalities where these cases are concentrated have been informed," he added.
