The health situation is cause for concern in Guadeloupe. Since the end of July, the number of identified cases of coronavirus has only increased. The region has had 50 additional cases of Covid-19 since Monday, and 4 people in intensive care, announced on Wednesday the regional health agency of Guadeloupe (ARS) and the prefecture.

Wearing a mask recommended but not compulsory

To cope with this increase in contamination, the authorities recommend wearing a mask in open public places. However, this is not, for the moment, an obligation. "This is the only measure we are taking, and the mayor of the municipalities is free to choose whether or not to impose the wearing of a mask in an open public place," said the ARS. For now, only the mayor of Abymes, one of the most populous municipalities on the island, has taken this measure.

In the department, the health authorities have launched itinerant PCR testing campaigns, municipality by municipality, in addition to the other tests carried out in the laboratory and at the Pasteur Institute. In total, said the ARS, "more than 21,000 tests have been carried out in Guadeloupe". The number of cumulative cases since the start of the crisis amounts to 367, including 14 deaths. Sunday, a patient from Saint-Martin, transferred to Guadeloupe, died on arrival at the CHU.
