  • Have “mask rest areas” been set up outside in France? In any case, this is what a viral publication on social networks suggests.
  • For those opposed to the obligation to wear a mask outside, a measure encouraged by the government, these areas demonstrate the absurdity of the measure.
  • The viral photo was however not taken in France but in Montreal, in a private amusement park where the wearing of the mask is obligatory "at all times".

On social networks, the photo of a sign is shared by opponents of wearing a mask in public space in order to highlight the absurdity of this measure. "Mask rest zone", can we read in large print, in French then in English. “This area is reserved for taking a short rest from wearing a mask. Please limit your break to 10 minutes ”, also explains the sign, located outside, near a body of water.

It did not take more to arouse ironic comments on the relevance of wearing a mask outdoors to fight against the coronavirus in France, a measure which the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, advocated for the extension in France during a speech Tuesday in the Hérault. "Phew, you are no longer at risk, you are in the #mask rest zone!" Here the virus cannot enter, you are safe! […] Is this world serious? »Asks a tweet. "Sometimes I wonder how did we get to this? I don't know whether to laugh or cry about it, ”wrote a French user on Facebook, whose post has been viewed more than 100,000 times.

This photo was taken out of context, however, because it was not taken in public space.

FAKE OFF

Before being shared by French users opposed to wearing a mask in public space, this photo was posted by a Montreal resident in a Quebec Facebook group entitled “Regroupement contre le port du masque obligatory”. The author also specifies having taken this photo at “La Ronde”. It is an amusement park located in the economic capital of Quebec.

In this case, it is therefore not a photo taken in a public space (a street, a park, a square, etc.): this “mask rest area” has been set up on a site. open to the public and outdoors, of course, but within the confines of a private park.

La Ronde has put in place very strict security measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus. In particular, "everyone on the site, including employees and visitors [over 2 years old] must wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth," explains Karina Thevenin, head of the communications division of La Ronde, in a video dedicated to health measures published on the amusement park website.

In a television report produced by Radio Canada on the occasion of the reopening of the "amusement park" at the end of July, the manager confirms the existence of these "rest areas", where the removal of the mask is authorized for a maximum of 10 minutes. “The mask is worn at all times on site, except in the eight mask-less rest areas and in the food courts,” says Karina Thevenin.

In Quebec, wearing a mask is compulsory on public transport and in public places that are closed or partially covered for people 12 years of age and over.
