16 people have had to be hospitalized in the province of Seville for a viral infection other than the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus. Pending confirmation by the Andalusian Health Service, it may be Nile fever , an infection associated with the bite of mosquitoes of the genus Aedes japonicus , according to the ABC newspaper of Seville.

Four of the 16 people who have required hospitalization have had to be admitted to intensive care units (ICU) due to severe meningoencephalitis caused by the infection. All of them are neighbors of the Sevillian municipalities of Coria del Río and La Puebla.

The Junta de Andalucía has activated a protocol in order to control the disease - which is not transmitted between people - and thus avoid further spread.

The 'Aedes japonicus' variety, an Asian species that in recent years has settled in some European countries, could be responsible for this outbreak in Seville.

The City Council of Coria del Río has issued a statement through its social networks in which it informs that the etiological origin of the infections is being investigated. "Given the doubts that exist about its origin and its mode of transmission, we recommend the use of insect repellent and avoid walking through humid areas, as a preventive measure if its origin is finally confirmed in a species of mosquito".
