"Naughty Boy of Bollywood" Sanjay Dutt has lung cancer

Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt, whose troubled life has been the subject of a movie, has lung cancer, Indian media announced today, Wednesday.

The 61-year-old actor, dubbed "the naughty boy of Bollywood", was released from prison in 2016 after four years behind bars following a long court process. He was convicted in 2007 of illegal possession of weapons after he received them from people involved in the attacks in Bombay on March 12, 1993, which left 257 dead.

The actor, born to a Muslim mother and Hindu father, who were two of the most important Indian stars, also faced drug abuse problems.

The artist published a statement on social media on Tuesday explaining that he is currently "on a short break to undergo medical treatment."

Later media reported a tweet in which specialist journalist Komal Nahata revealed that Dat suffers from lung cancer and is heading to the United States for treatment.

Sanjay Dutt rose to fame in the 1980s with action films directing his own dangerous scenes. His life took a dramatic turn with his arrest after the Bombay attacks.

After being sentenced to six years in prison, he spent 18 months behind bars before being released on bail pending an appeal. His sentence was commuted to five years in prison in 2013, and he was re-arrested before his release in early 2016 on the basis of an early release for good behavior.

The actor has been married three times, and lost his first wife, Risha, in 1996, after suffering a brain tumor.

In 2018, Dutt recounted his troubled life in a movie called "Sanju".
