At the end of 2017, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth and the Swedish Film Institute proposed that Sweden should introduce a state production discount of at least 25 percent for companies. Film i Väst has in March this year flagged that the region Västra Götaland can introduce discounts already now and 250 film workers have written a joint appeal where they believe that the discount should be introduced for the sake of the environment.

But in the spring change budget there is nothing about the production discount.

Greater competitiveness

The Film Institute's CEO Anna Serner hopes that the issue will finally be raised in the autumn budget.

- I assume that it will be handled during the autumn. I would think it would be strange if you do not implement something on which there is so much agreement. There seems to be a strong political will behind this.

What would it mean for the Swedish film industry if production discounts were introduced?

- This would mean that we can keep production in Sweden but also that we get greater competitiveness in bringing in other countries' productions. That would mean a lot to Swedish film workers and the entire film industry, says Anna Serner.

TV4 critical

TV4 is critical of the fact that the discounts are not already implemented in the spring change budget.

"We see that countries in our immediate area that have such a system have both been able to increase quality and simplify production so that more money can be spent on making good TV and film for viewers," writes Åsa Sjöberg, content director for TV4 and C More to Kulturnyheterna.
