Faced with the risk of a rebound in the coronavirus epidemic in France, the authorities announced that wearing a mask would be mandatory outdoors in certain areas of Paris, as of Monday. In the rest of the world, the milestone of 100,000 deaths has been crossed in Brazil and five million people have been infected in the United States. Follow the evolution of the situation live.

The coronavirus is not on vacation. In France, the authorities are taking measures on a case-by-case basis to prevent a second wave and a "generalized re-containment", as threatened by Jean Castex. Thus, wearing a mask will be compulsory from today in the busiest streets of Paris. Except that the heat wave and the summer do not motivate young people to respect sanitary measures: this weekend, the beaches and parks were crowded and a rave party brought together more than 5,000 people in Lozère.

Worldwide, the evolution of the number of cases in America is of great concern. Brazil officially has more than three million infected people and the United States has crossed the five million mark. Follow the evolution of the situation live.

The main information to remember:

  • As in many cities in France, wearing a mask is mandatory in certain areas of Paris from today
  • A rave party gathered this weekend more than 5,000 people in Lozère, "shocking" the population
  • The United States has passed the 5 million case mark

Wearing a mask is compulsory from this Monday in certain areas of Paris ...

Since the end of July, the almost generalized wearing of protective masks in closed public places has gained open air spaces across the planet. In France, where the coronavirus has killed more than 30,300 people according to the latest report published on Friday, it will be mandatory outdoors from Monday in certain busy areas in Paris. From the banks of the Seine to the heights of Montmartre, you will no longer be able to stroll with your face uncovered in the tourist districts and the main shopping streets of Paris. Europe 1 takes stock of the areas of the capital where wearing a mask is compulsory.

... but the high temperatures won't help

But this obligation will not be easy to enforce by the authorities. With the hot weather hitting Europe, it is more and more difficult to respect social distancing measures and the wearing of masks. In search of a little fresh air, people congregate on lawns and beaches. The situation is such that in Belgium, several Flemish towns and seaside resorts announced on Sunday the ban on "day tourists". In the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany too, crowds in search of freshness have gathered on the seashore, often ignoring the recommended separation distances.

In Lozère, the population "shocked" by a rave party

The population of Lozère, a department "spared" by the Covid-19 so far, was shocked to see thousands of people invade agricultural land for a rave party, prefect Valérie Hatsch told AFP on Sunday evening . Saturday evening around midnight, several hundred vehicles headed towards the Causse Méjean, in the heart of the Cévennes National Park, to set up a giant rave party in the town of Hures-la-Parade, said the prefect. According to the farmers, the town hall and the gendarmes, more than 10,000 people were present for this prohibited and illegal event. Sunday evening, according to the prefect, they were still "more than 5,000" present on the site.

The "Final 8" of the Champions League threatened?

Footballers are not spared by the epidemic. Four days before its Champions League quarter-final, two members of Atlético Madrid, whose identities have not been revealed, have thus tested positive for Covid-19. Which casts a shadow over the final phase of the queen club competition, starting Wednesday in Lisbon. Atlético, which faces Leipzig (9:00 p.m.), will see its preparations completely turned upside down by these two positive tests, which will lead it to place in isolation two members of the club whose identity has not been revealed. The match between Atalanta and Paris Saint-Germain, which is due to take place on Wednesday at 9 p.m., is not threatened.

Five million cases in the United States, Brazil still hard hit

The milestone of five million cases of Covid-19 was crossed on Sunday in the United States, now the world's leading power in the lead of the most affected countries. The pandemic caused by the coronavirus has killed more than 162,000 people in the United States, where the contaminations curve has been rising steeply since the end of June. The number of new cases recorded there reached 70,000 per day in mid-July. In second place among the hardest hit countries, Brazil officially has more than three million infected people. And this figure, as well as that of the dead, are undoubtedly underestimated according to the experts, because of the insufficient number of the tests.

Nearly 730,000 dead worldwide

In the past seven days, nearly one in two deaths worldwide has occurred in Latin America. The economic consequences are terrible everywhere on this subcontinent. In Ecuador, nearly 700,000 people have lost their jobs since the start of the epidemic. Peru recorded a daily record of 228 deaths from the coronavirus on Sunday, for a total of 21,072 deaths. On Friday, some areas were reconfigured, and the government extended the health emergency until August 31, maintaining the curfew and border closures. Globally, the virus has killed nearly 730,000 people and infected more than 19 million in total since the end of December.
