Amid an economic crisis unprecedented since the civil war, with basic infrastructure in ruins and with a second wave of the coronavirus hitting harder than the first, the Lebanese capital received what may be its coup de grace on Tuesday. An explosion of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate in the port caused almost half of the city to be destroyed or damaged, according to Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud. The blast particularly severely affected the area closest to the port, where residents, volunteers and organizations such as Doctors Without Borders were trying to solve the damage to hospitals, homes and businesses. This was Beirut 24 hours after the explosion.
