  • Pandemic: The Basque Government already admits a second wave of coronaviruses in its territory

The number of daily infections remains above one thousand and a half, although it has decreased slightly in the last 24 hours. The report updated by the Ministry of Health this Thursday records 1,683 new people infected with Covid-19 who underwent the diagnostic test in the last 24 hours compared to 1,772 on Wednesday. Of these, 329 correspond to Aragon; 322 to the Basque Country; and 310 to Madrid.

The real increase in positives (which adds to that group those previously diagnosed) rises to 4,088 . The data for this Thursday already includes those for Castilla La Mancha, which were not updated on Wednesday due to technical problems, and those for the Basque Country, which were also not released due to local festivities. Covid-19 has already affected 309,855 patients since the pandemic began.

The official count has also reported a new death in the last 24 hours . Thus, the total number of people who have lost their lives to Covid-19 in our country is already 28,500. This figure does not include deaths in residences or those who had symptoms compatible with the virus but who did not undergo the diagnostic test.

With death date in the last week, the Health report registers 22 deceased. Five correspond to Catalonia and Madrid. Aragon communicates four. Castilla La Mancha, three. Andalucía and Castilla y León, two; and Valencia, one. The rest of the communities have not registered any deaths.

Regarding the number of hospitalizations, Health reported 673 during the last week (on Wednesday they were 636). Most of this income is located in Aragon (203), Madrid (105) and Andalusia (82). Of these 673 hospitalizations, 41 patients have entered the ICU during the same period of time, four times as much as a month ago. In the week of July 6, the official report reported ten admissions to the intensive care unit. In total, there are already 11,841 since the start of the pandemic.

At the European level, Spain remains in third position by number of infections (309,855), only behind Russia (866,627) and the United Kingdom (307,184). Italy and Turkey continue in fourth and fifth position, with 248,803 and 234,934 infections, respectively. The country with the highest number of deaths is still the United Kingdom (46,364), followed by Italy (35,181) and France (30,305).

In addition, Spain continues for more than a week at the head of the large European countries with the highest incidence of the virus, with a cumulative incidence of 75 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days (on the previous day there were 72). A data far from the country in second place: Belgium, with 50.6; which exceeds Russia (49.5).

580 active outbreaks with 6,900 cases

Fernando Símón, director of the Coordination Center for Health Alerts and Emergencies, has stated that there are currently 580 active outbreaks totaling 6,900 cases of coronavirus. Since last week , another 154 outbreaks have been closed .

In his appearance at the Ministry of Health, Simón highlighted how the most relevant outbreaks began being, a month ago, those related to seasonal workers and are now located in family, social and nightlife-related contacts . Regarding those first outbreaks in the fruit and vegetable industry, the epidemiologist considers that "the control measures had their effect", although "the risk remains if the appropriate measures are not taken".

According to their data, 106 outbreaks, with 900 cases, have originated from family or private parties. And 46 outbreaks with 1,500 cases, about 32 cases per outbreak, in nightlife venues . "There are far fewer outbreaks, but the number of cases associated with each of them is greater and their management is more difficult," he assured about the latter.

Fernando Simón does not want to speak of the second wave , a concept that he has described as "a little fuzzy, gray, a kind of myth". In this regard, he has distanced himself from the Basque Minister of Health, who used this expression this Thursday. "Uncontrolled community transmission is at a very low level. Therefore, we cannot speak of a second wave," he said, before explaining that, from his point of view, Nekane Murga's words should be interpreted as a warning of that "we are at risk".

The epidemiologist has attributed the increase in diagnosed cases to greater detection efficiency . "We are detecting between 60% and 70% of the infections that exist in Spain, at the peak of the pandemic we detected 10%," he said. An increase that, from his point of view, corresponds to cases associated with outbreaks, which he has defined as "a controlled background transmission." The current objective is, in his words, "to reach September with the least possible community transmission."

In a review of the areas most affected by the new cases of coronavirus, Simón described the isolation of Aranda de Duero as "a very correct preventive measure" . He also assured that Aragon "perhaps has already exceeded the transmission peak" and "right now is not bearing" significant "hospital pressure. He has stated that" it is evolving well ", like Lérida and Barcelona.

Regarding the Basque Country , the director of the CCAES Simón highlighted that 81% of the cases diagnosed in the last week are asymptomatic. A percentage that, he said, contrasts with the 15% of asymptomatic patients reported by Madrid . "It is not a good indicator, we have to see where the problem is," he said on the latter data. The director of the CCAES has announced that on Thursday he will hold a video conference with the government chaired by Díaz Ayuso to clarify "information that we are receiving from different sources, sometimes contradictory."

The director of the CCAES has highlighted that despite the recent increase in diagnosed cases, "case fatality is at very low levels" and "there is no hospital at risk of collapse." Two statements that it has justified because the average age of those infected is being reduced to 40 years in men and 43 in women.

Even so, Fernando Simón has drawn attention to the fact that despite the median age of the 22 deceased in the last week being 83 years, no group can feel safe from complications . "We have some cases of deaths in our fifties and some cases around the age of 60. In all ages there are serious cases and deaths," he stressed.
