Actor Wilford Brimley, best known for his roles in movies like Cocoon and The Cover , has died at 85, the US media reported.

Utah-born Brimley made his way into the film industry doing stunt-related work on horseback, though he gradually found other roles that brought him more success.

In Ron Howard Cocoon's 1985 sci-fi film , which won two Oscars and was played by a group of Hollywood veterans, Brimley played a man in his 70s who, along with the other residents of a Florida retirement home , discover an alien energy source that rejuvenates them. The film was a huge box office success .

Another memorable role came with Tom Cruise in the 1993 thriller The Cover , where Brimley played a security officer who works for a law firm.

Actress Barbara Hershey, who starred in several movies with Brimley , described him on Twitter as a wonderful man and actor who "always made me laugh."
