• Coronavirus. Covid-19 strikes Spanish archeology: 36 million losses and 55% of unemployed professionals

An archaeological excavation in the Rioja municipality of Grañón has brought to light about 35 tombs out of a total of 90 that are part of a necropolis . The archaeological remains have been found during works on a section of the A-12 motorway and could date, according to Luis Alberto Villanueva, the director of this raid, from between the end of late Antiquity and the first phases of the Middle Ages .

Together with him, the excavation was visited by the president of the Executive of La Rioja, Concha Andreu, and the delegate of the Government in La Rioja, María Marrodán .

Villanueva himself has indicated that the location of these tombs "is no surprise" , since, prior to the excavation, in 2013, a "survey campaign" was carried out, which is why the location of these remains from that year. The excavation of these grave graves, which belong to both adults and children of different ages, is "quite advanced " because "all the previous work to document the covers of the graves are already done," he said.

He stressed that the intention is to excavate around 90 tombs in this space, located 400 meters from the urban area of Grañón, which "seems to correspond to two consecutive chronological moments ". "We do not see reuse of the tombs, that is, the tombs have been used only once, and there are some multiple tombs, with more than one buried, as well as tombs with anthropomorphic heads," he detailed.

He has also pointed out that "all the tombs are excavated at the geological base", correspond to "Christian burials oriented from east to west" and the position of the bodies is face up.

Two-week digging

Once the nearly one hundred localized tombs are excavated, which is expected to take about two weeks , the documentation, photography, topography and photogrammetry work will be completed and the burial bodies will be raised "to make an anthropological study," he said.

Villanueva has stressed that the buried and the materials found associated with them will be transferred to the cabinet of the company Antequem, archeology and the environment, which has been working on this excavation for a month, after carrying out the environmental impact study and drafting the project. . The work "will be completed in collaboration with the department of Anthropology of a university", still to be determined, he said.

The mayor of Grañón, José Ignacio Castro , who also visited the excavation on Wednesday, explained to Efe that about four years ago eight tombs were found in this section and that the discovery of the site is attracting many people to this town, located on the Camino de Santiago and about 54 kilometers from Logroño .
