A 96-year-old student graduated from the University of Palermo, Italy, to become the oldest student in Italian history.

Giuseppe Paterno was born in 1923, but his age did not stand in his way to enroll in studies and specialization in history and philosophy.

Paterno grew up in a poor family and was unable to enroll at the university as a young man and then served in the navy during World War II, from the age of 20, after which he became a railroad worker.

The man finally graduated after three years of study on Wednesday (29 July) to become the largest university graduate in Italy, and as a result he won the admiration of his colleagues, teachers and family who clapped warmly during the graduation ceremony.

Paterno achieved the "highest honors degree", the highest mark in the class. The university president also placed a traditional laurel wreath granted to Italian students on his head.

In response to a question about his feeling of graduation at an older age than most people in the world, he said: "I am an ordinary person, like many others, in terms of age I have exceeded all others but I have completed my studies because of the desire to do so."

He pointed out that he used a typewriter during his studies, and also used books instead of Google to search for information.
