Although SARS-CoV-2 respiratory shedding and excreta can be prolonged, the viable virus duration is relatively short. Thus, viral RNA detection cannot be used to infer the infection.
Scientists say understanding the viral dynamics, the duration of viral RNA shedding, and the isolation of the applicable virus are necessary to understand disease transmission, determine the duration of infection, and communicate the effectiveness of control measures.
Antonio Hu, lead author of the study and colleagues analyzed 79 studies related to "Covid-19" and 11 studies on Middle East respiratory syndrome, focusing on virus shedding (when those viral particles escape into the environment, this is called virus shedding).
For Covid-19, the average duration of viral RNA shedding was 17 days. This was while the lower respiratory tract infection (LRT) was between 14.6 days to 17.2 days, when it was found in a stool sample, and 16.6 days when it was found in sera.
The researchers said the maximum shedding periods were 83, 59, 35 and 60 days, respectively.

The study comes as the UK government has announced that the isolation of people with symptoms will increase from seven to ten days.
